We are having our next (rescheduled) Silk Dye Painters of Atlanta & Beyond meeting at the home studio of Agnes Oberth on July 23 Saturday in Acworth, GA. Agnes Oberth is a painter and fiber artist who has worked in needlework, art quilts, portrait painting, yarn and cotton dyeing and more. She currently works with silk dye painting and has been experimenting with various materials and techniques. She paints her "Daisy" series of a young woman in domestic settings highlighted with patterns on walls and floors, and her mood filled "Jazz Singer" series. Come see how Agnes works, and afterwards for those who are interested, we will sit down and add dye to our "mandala" flags for the Silk Painters International Festival conference in October at Arrowmont, in Gatlinburg, TN. New Silk Painters Meeting April 9 Saturday

It's another Silk Painters of Atlanta meeting, open to anyone interested in silk dye painting. We will be deciding on a design for our Georgia Chapter Goodwill Flags to be displayed at the next Silk Conference being held in October at Arrowmont, in Gatlinburg TN. http://www.silkpainters.org/festival.php

After a quick business meeting and a request for contributing $3 each for room rental fee, we will decide on the design for our 17"x17" silk flags.

I will bring Resistad and we will go ahead and apply resist to the silk. If we have time, we will dry and heat set the resist and start applying the dyes.

Please RSVP to me at hellenne@live.com if you will be attending so I will know how many supplies I need to bring. This will be a good opportunity for those who have never tried using resist or even painted on silk to experience this process. No experience necessary.

This is the gallery in SW Georgia that several of us have had great success in showing and selling. A Taste of Silk Dye Painting: One Day Make and Take Workshop

One 3 hour session with supplies included March 28, Saturday 1:00 - 4:00

Have you even wondered what silk dye painting is all about? Here is an opportunity to get a taste of what it’s like without investing in supplies. Each student will work on an 18″x18″ piece of silk  or 20" x 20" scarf using a water based resist to draw lines. After drying and heat setting the lines, you will paint using acid dyes. Instead of steam setting the dyes, the final piece will be dipped in a chemical fixative to make the dyes permanent. Although this will not yield the maximum intensity of dyes on silk, it is the next best alternative and will give you an idea of the silk dye painting process. All materials included. Just bring an apron, your favorite water color brushes, and gloves.

Hellenne Vermillion has been working with silk dye painting for over eight years and has had works published in books and magazines, and shown in fashion shows.

New Silk Dyeing Class

Choose either a Wednesday or aSaturday 5 week Silk Dye Painting class in April View this email in your browser For the most brilliant colors on silk, we will be using professional acid dyes which will then be steam set for permanency. Dyes bond to the fiber of the silk keeping the fabric soft to the touch unlike paints that sit on top of the fabric and leave a stiff hand. With a special water based non-toxic resist we will draw or trace designs directly onto the silk. Lessons will include the different techniques we can use with this resist, including colored resist lines, and also techniques on creating texture with salt. Dyes will be directly painted onto the silk (not to be confused with silk screening). Steam setting will be demonstrated and each student will be able to steam set once during class as practice. This is a great opportunity to create scarves for yourself or for gifts. And silk yardage can be used to create paintings or wall hangings.

New Silk Dye Painting Class starts Wed Oct 22

Hi Silk Dye Painting Enthusiasts,

Silk Dye Painting Class will start October 22 for 5 weeks on Wednesdays from 10:30 am - 1:30 pm at the SEFAA Center, right off of I-75 Northside Drive Exit for $150.

These classes will be focused on using resist lines and creating textures on silk using acid dyes. We will be using Resistad, a water based resist from New Zealand, salt, alcohol, water, and dilutant. You can either do pre-hemmed scarf blanks or plain yardage pieces. 

We will not be using wax resist, screen techniques, discharging, or shibori methods. These need a workshop day or two of their own and those workshops will be scheduled at other times.

Oct 6 Silk Painters of Atlanta Meeting

Wow, Karen Barefield gave a fantastic presentation at our Silk Painters of Atlanta meeting today! Karen had an opportunity to take a workshop with Karen Sistek of Magic Sizing fame and did a quick demo for us.

This is the beautiful silk painting she did at the workshop mounted onto canvas.

Karen showed us from spraying the silk with Magic Sizing, to explaining the different solutions of "dilutant," to how blend the dye. We each had a turn at trying out this technique.

Karen prepared this piece for us to try out the technique.

Magic Sizing is sprayed onto the silk and let to dry. A drawing is then sketched onto the silk.

The four different "diluting" solutions: alcohol, alcohol and vodka, Magic Sizing and alcohol, and a mix of alcohol, Magic Sizing, and vodka.

First wet the area using a clean Q-tip with the Mix solution.

Paint with a dry brush and blend well.

Tape and straight silk pins hold the silk to the frame.

Recommended pencil.

We also had Show-n-Tell.

Karen painted and sewed this vest. She will be adding one of her glass buttons she made for the closure. Note her glass bead necklace she made. We also got to purchase some of her gorgeous glass beads she makes.

NATURAL DYEING: INDIGO SILK SCARF

The rich blue hue of indigo-dyed fabrics has transfixed people for centuries. Indigo, in fact, is among the oldest textile dyes, originating in India and South East Asia and spreading through trade to Europe, Africa and America. One of Georgia’s first cash crops was actually wild indigo!

Now you can explore the process by which a leafy green plant becomes dye that, through oxidation, transforms fabric from green to blue before your eyes. Plus, because it doesn’t require chemicals to be lightfast, indigo is a great place to begin discovering the art of natural dyes. Join Gretchen in two days of indigo dyeing, and go home with a beautiful blue silk scarf of your design.

On the first day, you’ll learn about the chemistry of natural dyes, the history of indigo and try your hand at several techniques including plangi shibori, arashi shibori as well as traditional tie, stitch and clamp resists. On the second day, you’ll design and create your own masterpiece to wear for years to come. Plus, if you have any natural fiber fabrics or yarn at home you’d like to dye, please bring them along!

About the Instructor:Gretchen is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design with a concentration in Fibers. She seeks anything to ignite her passion, spark her creativity and be spiritually grounding. Having studied Fibers in college, she was naturally attracted to textiles and how easily they could be manipulated with color and form.

Gretchen owns a small business, Thrive, where she continually explores the endless possibilities of dyeing in her studio. The products she produces through Thrive are a reflection of her own personal journey and transformation within her practice of meditation and yoga.
