NATURAL DYEING: INDIGO SILK SCARF

The rich blue hue of indigo-dyed fabrics has transfixed people for centuries. Indigo, in fact, is among the oldest textile dyes, originating in India and South East Asia and spreading through trade to Europe, Africa and America. One of Georgia’s first cash crops was actually wild indigo!
Now you can explore the process by which a leafy green plant becomes dye that, through oxidation, transforms fabric from green to blue before your eyes. Plus, because it doesn’t require chemicals to be lightfast, indigo is a great place to begin discovering the art of natural dyes. Join Gretchen in two days of indigo dyeing, and go home with a beautiful blue silk scarf of your design.indigo
On the first day, you’ll learn about the chemistry of natural dyes, the history of indigo and try your hand at several techniques including plangi shibori, arashi shibori as well as traditional tie, stitch and clamp resists. On the second day, you’ll design and create your own masterpiece to wear for years to come. Plus, if you have any natural fiber fabrics or yarn at home you’d like to dye, please bring them along!
About the Instructor:Gretchen is a graduate of the Savannah College of Art and Design with a concentration in Fibers. She seeks anything to ignite her passion, spark her creativity and be spiritually grounding. Having studied Fibers in college, she was naturally attracted to textiles and how easily they could be manipulated with color and form.
Gretchen owns a small business, Thrive, where she continually explores the endless possibilities of dyeing in her studio. The products she produces through Thrive are a reflection of her own personal journey and transformation within her practice of meditation and yoga.

Kiranada Benjamin Workshop

Kiranada Benjamin left, front row. Students with their work.
A three day workshop was given by the master silk artist Kiranada Benjamin click here for website at the end of June in Atlanta at the SEFAA Center (www.fiberartsalliance.org). An intense and information packed wonderful three days where ten of us learned Japanese Rozome (wax resist) with techniques using bokashi, etching, and stencils using acid dye pigments from Japan and soy milk as sizing. Here are some samples of things we practiced:

blending using special handmade Japanese dye brushes

etching on wax resist and filling in lines with dye

blending, wax resist in layers, wax crackling

Kiranada Benjamin plans to return for a 5 day workshop in March of 2014 in Atlanta to once again share her 40plus years of experience with Rozome.

Workshop on Framing of Silk Pieces, etc

Martha Andreatos gave us a wonderful workshop on framing our silk pieces. She showed us how to adhere silk to a purchased canvas with matte medium, how to wrap a silk piece over a stretcher bar frame over a layer of flannel, and how to paint matte medium on the edge of a silk hanging piece to stop fraying.

Martha Andreatos showing one of her nude silk painting pieces she had adhered to stretched canvas.

Examples of various methods of framing silk pieces.

Sue M and Cici L having fun during the workshop.

Martha demonstrating how to wrap silk around a stretcher bar frame.

Quilting flannel (acid free) is added first to the stretcher frame to create a padding for the silk.

Taking care of the corners.

Using acrylic matte medium to "glue" silk to purchased canvas.
